Winter is Coming—Fendi F/W 2014 Channels Eddard Stark, and You Can Too

Whether for men or for women, animal pelts are a signature element in any Fendi collection and that fact was never more prevalent than on the F/W 2014 runway.

The collection itself was everything we could normally expect from the Italian luxury fashion house: well-tailored, modish, sharp... They focused on their usual specialties: ready-to-wear, accessories, shoes, watches, leather, and of course fur—Fur is Fendi and Fendi is fur, after all. Fendi is most notable for its techniques and integration of fur in design, and the way in which it was used in the F/W 2014 collection added a very rugged posh-ness to the sophisticated, but at times stuffy suit and sweater sets; to create looks that were (ironically) barbaric and medieval in character. The fur accents stood as an archaic cohesion that hinted at a very Eddard Stark style of dressing. I'm particularly a fan of the way the fur accented the collars and jackets—broadening the shoulders in a look that was reminiscent of the wide, puffy-sleeved silhouette worn by royalty and noblemen such as King Henry VIII and Viking and Celt warriors of days olde. Such flare might seem a little feminine in this time, but it is undeniably powerful and stately here. This collection is everything a modern man of the North might wear to beat the frostier season of Winterfell. House Fendi, whether intentionally or not, has definitely channeled House Stark. Fendi reminds us that winter is, in fact, coming and since we cannot all afford the Fendi price tag, I've compiled a list of budget-friendly buys to help you satisfy both your inner nerd and your inner Ned Stark—a.k.a. ‘man’.

Alternatively, you can take a tip from the ladies and try a leather motorcycle or bomber jacket, or tweed pea-coat, and top it with a detachable collar, like so:

Now, fur collars definitely aren’t a brand new innovation, fashion will always repeat itself and fur collars aren’t an exception to the matter. However, it never ceases to surprise me by just how surprised others are to see the look. I myself have a collection of faux fur and vintage real fur collars, detachable, so that I can interchange them with any of my coats or jackets or vests, and I always get compliments on them, especially from men. For instance: I used to work at a vintage clothing store in the Montrose area of Houston and one day in particular I had worn my vintage motorcycle jacket with a vintage mink collar over it. Naturally, I took it off when it got too stuffy, and I hung it up on the holds rack. A customer, lets call him ‘Dan’ (as in ‘dapper) pointed at it and asked how much it was, thinking it was all once piece for sale. I politely told Dan that it wasn’t for sale, and it wasn’t one piece either. I showed him my styling ‘trick’ and he was so inspired to find that I had simply accessorized my jacket with a separate piece; he asked me if I could help him find one for his trip to New York. Needless to say, Dan was a happy camper when I called him over the next few days with a luxurious sable collar that I shopped just for him and he’s been a client of mine since.

Our Viking forefathers sported the style, so why can't we? (Ragnar Lothbrok wears the look very well, I might add.) If you're hesitant about shopping the aforementioned 'womens' accessories, remember: when it comes down to it fashion is all about what you make it and style is all in how you wear it.

Make it your own, and wear it as you.
